Cookies Were Made

Although we don't celebrate Christmas in our own home, (well, we actually do, but with movies and chinese food, in the jewish tradition), I walk in my grandmother, Helen Glass' shoes as a cookie baker. The beautiful springerle rolling pin below was hers and I feel connected to her every time I use it. I have made all manner of springerle over the years: the classic, hard, time-consuming kind, the martha stewart pretty green tea kind, but to me, it is all about the pin and pattern.  This year, I tried the King Arthur springerle shortbread recipe and it was a beautiful thing.  I added a load of cinnamon and ended up with a lovely cookie that was delicious and held the shape of the mold. Recipe here:http://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/springerle-shortbread-recipe, at King Arthur Flour - a Vermont treasure by the way!
